Teaching Studio Policies

Schedule

All students are assigned a weekly lesson day and time. You may request to change your regular lesson time by contacting me directly with reasonable advance notice. Lessons can be offered in person or online, to be discussed between the teacher and student.

Students on the semester or monthly payment plan can expect 44 lessons per year (22 per semester) which comes out to 3-5 lessons per month (depending on the number of weeks in the month and/or holidays). Fall semester runs from September-January, Spring semester runs from February-June. Summer lessons are more flexible and can be scheduled on a weekly basis.

Cancellations & rescheduling

Please treat your scheduled lesson time as you would any other serious commitment. However, if you cannot attend your regular lesson time for any reason, please send a notification by email or text as soon as possible.

If it is more than 24 hours before the lesson, please send the notification and the reason by email. If it is less than 24 hours before the lesson, please send the notification by text, to ensure it is received in time.

With enough notice, it is possible to discuss trading lesson slots with another student or rescheduling directly with the me. Due to the complexity of a teaching schedule, make-up lessons for lessons canceled by the student cannot be guaranteed, but may be available upon request and on a case by case basis. Payment represents a reservation of the teacher’s time; if the teacher is not available for a make-up lesson, it will not be refunded.

SNOW DAYS: In case of severe weather (ex. snow days), lessons may be cancelled and made up at a later date, or an online lesson may be offered.

SICKNESS: If you or your child is sick, please do not come to your lesson. This puts the teacher and the rest of the teacher’s students at risk. Online lessons can be offered if the student is well enough to participate. Since payment reserves the teacher’s time, cancellation due to illness cannot be refunded. At the discretion of the teacher, rescheduling can be discussed. In the case of longer-term illness, individual adjustments can be arranged.

TEACHER CANCELLATION: While I make every effort not to disrupt the regular teaching schedule, occasional rescheduling of lessons may be required. In such cases, I will give as much notice as possible and find a suitable make-up time or provide a well-qualified substitute for that lesson.

Parent participation

Parents of students under 12 years old are highly encouraged to sit in on lessons and to participate in practice at home. This is especially important for very young students. Most parents will be new to learning an instrument too, so don’t worry, I will provide a structured practice plan to show parents how they can help their child learn at home!

Practice commitment

Learning an instrument requires steady commitment and patience. In order to progress as a musician, students should expect to practice at least 5 days a week, 30-60 minutes per day, all year round.
